Garage Door Remotes
When a garage door won’t respond to the remote, or the motor runs but the door doesn’t move properly, it’s easy to assume the whole opener needs replacing.
Often it doesn’t. A motor fault can look identical to a completely different problem — and telling the two apart properly, before any parts are replaced, is most of the job.
Myaree Garage Door Service repairs and replaces garage door motors and remotes across Myaree, Melville and the surrounding suburbs. Rod is a qualified mechanical fitter with more than 25 years’ experience, and diagnoses the actual cause before recommending a fix — not the other way around.
The most important thing to know before you call
If your motor is straining, stopping halfway through its travel, or tripping out partway through opening or closing, there’s a good chance the problem isn’t the motor at all — it’s a spring that’s lost tension or failed. The motor is only designed to guide the door; the spring carries the weight. A motor working against a bad spring will strain, overheat, and eventually fail itself, even though it was fine to begin with.
This matters because it’s the difference between paying for a $300–$400 spring repair and paying for a motor you didn’t actually need. Before condemning a motor, we check the door’s balance and spring condition first — you’ll never be sold a new opener to fix a problem that was really a spring. See our spring and cable repairs page for more on this.
Common motor faults we fix
- The door won't respond to the remote or wall button at all
- The motor runs but the door doesn't move
- The door reverses unexpectedly partway through closing
- Grinding, clicking or straining noises from the motor unit
- The motor stops working intermittently, or only in certain weather
- The safety sensors won't align, causing the door to refuse to close
- The logic board or circuit has failed
- The chain, belt or drive screw has worn or slipped
Common remote and sensor faults we fix
Not every “the door won’t open” call turns out to be the motor. Some of the most common culprits are much simpler:
- Flat or dying remote batteries
- A remote that’s lost its programming or fallen out of sync with the receiver
- Safety sensors at the base of the door that have drifted out of alignment, are dirty, or have something blocking the beam between them
- A lost or damaged remote needing replacement or reprogramming
- Interference from nearby electronics affecting the signal
If your door has simply stopped responding, it’s worth checking the sensors aren’t blocked or misaligned and swapping the remote battery before assuming the worst — though if that doesn’t fix it, we’ll sort out the rest.
Brands we work with
We repair and replace openers across the common brands fitted in Perth homes, including Merlin, ATA, B&D, Chamberlain, Gliderol, Guardian, Grifco and Steel-Line. If you’re not sure what brand your opener is, that’s fine — describe it or send a photo when you call, and we’ll identify it on the spot.
When to Repair
Repair usually makes sense if the motor is relatively young, the fault is a single component (a sensor, a circuit board, a chain), or the unit is otherwise in good condition.
When to Replace
Replacement usually makes sense if the motor is old, has failed more than once, or parts are no longer available for that model.
We'll always tell you honestly which situation applies rather than defaulting to a full replacement, because a $150 part is often all that's needed.
What happens when you call
2. He inspects the motor, the sensors, and the door’s balance before diagnosing anything, so you’re not paying to fix the wrong part.
4. Most faults are fixed in one visit, with commonly needed sensors, receivers, remotes and drive components carried on the van.
Roller doors and sectional doors
Opener faults show up a little differently depending on your door type. Roller door motors typically sit in a compact housing above the curtain and drive the roller drum directly — see roller door repairs for more on roller-specific issues.
Sectional door motors usually run along an overhead rail using a chain or belt — see sectional door repairs. Either way, diagnosis starts the same way: check the door itself before blaming the motor.
A local tradesman, not a call centre
Myaree Garage Door Service is family owned and operated, based in Myaree and covering Melville, Attadale, Bicton, Applecross, Alfred Cove, Palmyra and Willagee. You’ll deal with Rod directly from the first call through to the finished repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
My door won't open at all — is it definitely the motor?
Not necessarily. Flat remote batteries, misaligned safety sensors, or a spring problem can all look like a dead motor. We check all of these before assuming the motor’s at fault.
Should I repair my motor or replace it?
It depends on the motor’s age, the fault, and whether parts are still available. We’ll give you an honest recommendation rather than defaulting to the most expensive option.
Can you match my existing remote, or do I need a new system?
In most cases we can supply a compatible remote or reprogram an existing one. A full system replacement is usually only needed if the receiver itself has failed.
How long does a motor or remote repair take?
Most faults, including sensor and remote issues, are resolved in a single visit. A full motor replacement typically takes a bit longer but is still usually done the same day.
